Effects of A-site atoms in Ti2AlC and Ti3SiC2 MAX phases reinforced Mg composites: Interfacial structure and mechanical properties

AZ91D magnesium composites reinforced by Ti3SiC2 MAX phase were fabricated the stir casting technique. Tensile tests reveal that effects of and Ti2AlC on Mg matrix are different. Unlike Ti2AlC-AZ91D composite for which delamination happens during fracture, Ti3SiC2-AZ91D fractures interfacial debonding mechanisms. Transmission electron microscopy characterization shows few nanometric grains form in vicinity particles, while huge amount along with particles. Elements mapping confirms Al atoms diffuse into matrix. In contrast, no outward diffusion Si is observed. This outcome points out it possible to regulate mechanical properties their relevant through adjusting content phases, such as Ti3SiAlC2 solid solution.
